PART I: SARDINIA — THE ISLAND OF GIANTS & ARCHAEOASTRONOMY
Day 1: September 17th – Arrival in Sardinia & The Giant Bones of Sant’Anastasia
We pick you up by private minibus at Cagliari Airport (please arrive by 4:00 PM) and drive to the magnificent Sardegna Termale Hotel 4* in Sardara, a luxury spa hotel built directly above subterranean thermal water channels used since Nuragic and Roman times. We visit the Sant’Anastasia Sacred Well and three surrounding healing springs.
-
The Giant Mystery: Intriguingly, Sant’Anastasia is tied to official historical records: in an early archaeological excavation account, the lead archaeologist officially documented finding human bones of extraordinary size, measuring up to 6 meters (20 feet) in height!
-
Evening: Welcome dinner included, followed by an introductory presentation by Hugh Newman, Arianna Mendo, and Enrico Gelain.
Day 2: September 18th – The Mont'e Prama Colossi & Genna Maria Nuraghe
We visit the megalithic Is Concias Giant’s Grave on the outskirts of Cagliari, followed by the Cagliari National Archaeological Museum. Here, we stand face-to-face with the Mont'e Prama Giants—colossal 3,000-year-old stone statues carved with mysterious concentric circular eyes—and Sardinia’s finest collection of Nuragic bronze figurines (bronzetti).
-
Afternoon: Free time in Cagliari's historical center, or join us for an optional trip to explore the impressive hilltop Genna Maria Nuraghe, set within a scenic park overlooking the Gulf of Cagliari.
Day 3: September 19th – UNESCO Montessu Hypogeums & Sa Tueredda
We explore the breath-taking Montessu Necropolis, an immense natural amphitheater containing over 40 rock-cut chamber tombs (Domus de Janas). Montessu is part of Sardinia's prestigious newly designated UNESCO World Heritage sites, celebrated for its sacred symbolism and Afterlife rituals. After lunch in town, we visit the Sa Tueredda Giant’s Grave, renowned for its unique, precision stone-cutting style.

Day 4: September 20th – Su Nuraxi Fortress & The Göbekli Tepe Connection

-
The Göbekli Tepe Link: These ancient, human-shaped monoliths feature carved daggers, stylized faces, and distinct carved belts around their waists—bearing a striking resemblance to the T-shaped megalithic pillars of Göbekli Tepe in Turkey!
-
In the afternoon, we explore the vast and remarkably intact Sa Domu 'e s’Orku Giant’s Grave.

Day 5: September 21st – The 17 Towers of Arrubbiu & The Italian Stonehenge
We explore Nuraghe Arrubbiu ("The Red Nuraghe"). While long believed to consist of 13 towers, recent archaeological excavations have uncovered a total of 17 towers, revealing a vast megalithic citadel constructed with human-sized blocks. In the afternoon, we visit Pranu Mutteddu, known as the "Stonehenge of Italy," featuring striking menhir alignments, stone circles, and megalithic tombs.
Day 6: September 22nd – Autumn Equinox at Santa Cristina & Nuraghe Losa
-
Equinox Alignment at Santa Cristina Holy Well: Today marks the culmination of Nuragic precision engineering and archaeoastronomy. During the Equinox, as the sun reaches its zenith, the waters inside the subterranean chamber act as a mirror: light reflects upward, projecting your inverted shadow onto the stairs as you descend—a profound ancient initiation ceremony linking heaven and earth. (Note: Santa Cristina is also engineered for the Major Northern Lunistice every 18.5 years).
-
Next, we explore Nuraghe Losa, one of the most elegant triangular nuraghes in Sardinia.
-
Accommodation: Check-in at the charming Hotel Cavallino Rosso in Thiesi, our base for the next two nights (Sept 22nd – 24th).

Day 7: September 23rd – Monte d’Accoddi Pyramid, Cart Ruts & Santu Antine
We start at Monte d’Accoddi, a unique megalithic step-pyramid considered the oldest ziggurat structure in Europe. We then explore Su Crucifissu Mannu, a UNESCO-nominated Domus de Janas site featuring carved bull horns, subterranean chambers, and mystery deeply carved cart ruts extending nearly 700 meters across the limestone rock.
-
Afternoon Update: With S’Incantu closed for restoration, we visit the magnificent Santu Antine Nuraghe—once the tallest building in Neolithic Europe—featuring a three-story central tholos tower and two-story vaulted megalithic corridors.
-
Accommodation: Hotel Cavallino Rosso, Thiesi.

Day 8: September 24th – Oschiri Rock Altar, Giant Skeletons & Gallura Megaliths
We visit the enigmatic Santo Stefano Rock Altar in Oschiri, a granite outcrop carved with mysterious geometric niches, triangular cutouts, and rock-cut seats. We then head north to Arzachena to explore the Coddu Vecchiu and Li Lolghi Giant's Tombs, whose curved forecourts and bull-head stele align precisely to the equinoxes, solstices, and the Taurus constellation.
-
9-Foot Skeleton Discovery: It was in this northern region of Sardinia that a 9-foot (2.7-meter) giant skeleton was unearthed in 1901, alongside several other giant remains reported throughout the 20th century.
-
We also visit the Li Muri stone circles and cist graves.
-

We board the morning ferry from Santa Teresa di Gallura to Bonifacio, greeted by its dramatic white limestone cliffs. After a lunch break, we drive to the medieval mountain town of Sartène and visit the Sartène Archaeological Museum. Here, we inspect rare artifacts and learn about Corsica's bronze-age Torrean culture and anthropomorphic statue-menhirs. Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel Des Roches 3* in Sartène.

Day 10 / Corsica Day 2: September 26th – The Filitosa Statues & Alo Bisuje Citadel
-
Filitosa Megalithic Site: Discover Corsica’s most celebrated megalithic sanctuary! Discovered in 1946, Filitosa features extraordinary anthropomorphic statue-menhirs carved into granite, depicting prehistoric warriors complete with detailed faces, helmets, swords, and daggers. We will inspect the ancient quarry, the central tower structure, and the 2,000-year-old olive trees surrounding the site.
-
We also visit the solitary U Paladinu Menhir and the hilltop Alo Bisuje Torrean Citadel to compare Corsican megalithic towers with Sardinian nuraghes. Overnight in Sartène.

Day 11 / Corsica Day 3: September 27th – The Cauria Alignment, Fontanaccia Dolmen & Paddaghju
-
The Cauria Plateau: An extraordinary megalithic landscape:
-
Renaghju: The oldest menhir alignment on the island, nestled within a cork-oak forest.
-
Stantari: A striking line of warrior statue-menhirs standing guard over the valley, aligned to solar directions.
-
Fontanaccia Dolmen (Stazzona del Diavolu): The most famous and perfectly preserved dolmen in Corsica, constructed from massive interlocking granite slabs.
-
-
Paddaghju (Pagliaiu): The largest menhir alignment in the Mediterranean! Over 200 standing stones arranged in parallel lines, revealing sophisticated energy lines and astronomical alignments reminiscent of Carnac in Brittany.

Reviews of the 2019 Sardinia Tour
"Thanks again, Hugh & JJ for a great tour!!" - Peggy Roberts, USA
"Many, many thanks for all you did to make our holiday so successful. It was thoroughly enjoyable, if tiring. But perhaps that is my age. It was a pleasure to have everything run smoothly and see so many really interesting sights/sites" - Tricia Morgan, USA
"Thanks again for a great holiday - and I look forward to travelling with you again" - Viv Amos, USA
"Thoroughly enjoyed the 2019 May Sardinia Tour, thanks to the 'Mega Team'. Beautiful country, fantastic ancient sites, delightful cuisine and great, new friends. Our amazing guides showed us the best sites, not on the normal tourist routes, and each site was explained in spellbinding detail and care. The evidence of ancient civilisations is all about, but you need to know where to look and it's best explored with expert guides. A life changing journey. Now planning our next." - Hugh Evans, UK
"Seeing inland Sardinia – its landscapes and countryside – was a revelation. To think of all that tranquiility and beauty only two hours flight away, and with so few people around! Arianna and Enrico certainly knew their sites and chose some extraordinary places for us. I was particularly drawn to the sacred wells, our morning at the pyramid and the Mont'e Prama statues. Our hotels were a delight - so were the local food and wine. Everyone seemed enthusiastic and I came away hoping that one day I shall return to this beautiful island." - Yvonne Whiteman, UK
"Thanks once again for a brilliant tour!" - Ian Bush, UK
"Thank you Hugh, JJ, Arianna and Enrico and all other Megalithomaniacs!!!!! What a fantastic week. We saw and did such fantastic things. Old sights were brought to life by Arianna and Enrico and their in depth explanations. SUPER!!!!! I would also like to thank the numerous 'hands and and arms' that were extended to help me navigate the uneven ground. Without this assistance I would not have made it. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you ALL!!!" - Diane Sommelet, France
"Thank you for a lovely, interesting, informative and enjoyable tour. It has reawakened a part of me that has not seen the light for a few years. Thank you for the company, the chats and the music! Can anybody tell me how to get Bohemian Rhapsody out of my head? Look forward to seeing you again soon." - Vee Kiely, UK
